Chain Care on Corrugated Roads
The chain is the fastest wearing component on almost every bike in this region, and the reason is not the corrugations. It is what the dust does once it mixes with the lubricant you just applied.
We replace more chains and sprockets than any other component, by a wide margin. Riders often assume it is the vibration from corrugated roads doing the damage. It contributes, but the main mechanism is simpler and more preventable.
Why dust plus lube is worse than dust alone
Pindan dust is very fine and highly abrasive. On a dry chain, most of it falls off. On a chain that has been generously sprayed with sticky lubricant, it does not. It adheres, builds up, and forms a grinding paste that sits exactly where you least want it — between the rollers, the pins and the sprocket teeth.
The result is that a bike lubricated frequently but never cleaned wears out faster than one that is simply left dry. This is counterintuitive enough that people argue with us about it at the counter, but you can see it on the parts. A chain that comes off a Kimberley bike after 8,000 kilometres of that treatment is often visibly worse than one that did 15,000 with nothing at all.
The interval that works

Doing it properly
- Warm the chain. A short ride first makes the old lubricant and grit come away far more easily than working on a cold chain.
- Brush it dry first. A grunge brush or an old toothbrush, working the inner and outer plates and both sides of the rollers. Get the bulk of the dust off before any solvent goes near it.
- Use the right cleaner. A dedicated chain cleaner, or kerosene. Not petrol, and not a strong degreaser on an O-ring or X-ring chain — harsh solvents attack the seals, and once the seals are gone the factory grease inside is gone with them.
- Dry it completely. Compressed air if you have it, a rag if you do not. Lubricating over solvent is close to pointless.
- Apply lubricant sparingly, to the inside run. The centrifugal force of the wheel carries it outward. Aim at the inner surface of the lower run, rotating the wheel slowly.
- Leave it to set. Fifteen minutes minimum before riding. Lubricant applied and immediately ridden on mostly ends up on your rear wheel and the back of your bike.
- Wipe off the excess. Anything on the outer plates is doing no work and collecting dust. Take it off.
Which lubricant
For dusty conditions, a dry film or wax-based lubricant collects noticeably less grit than a heavy sticky spray. It needs applying more often, which is a fair trade in this environment.
Heavy tacky lubricants have their place — sustained wet riding, or a bike doing long sealed distances. In red dust they are usually the wrong choice. We stock both and will ask what your riding looks like before recommending one.
Tension, and why it matters more here
Set the tension to the figure in your owner's manual, measured at the point the manual specifies, with the bike loaded as the manual specifies. There is no universal number and guessing produces expensive results.
- Too tight loads the output shaft bearing and the swingarm pivot. On a bike that also absorbs constant corrugation impacts, that is a bearing failure waiting to happen.
- Too loose lets the chain slap the swingarm, wear the guide, and in the worst case jump a sprocket or come off entirely.
- Check at several points around the chain, not just one. A chain with tight spots is worn unevenly and is close to finished.
How to tell when it is finished
Four checks, none of which need special tools:
- Pull test. At the rear sprocket's three o'clock position, pull the chain away from the teeth. If you can see daylight over more than about half a tooth, it is stretched.
- Tight spots. Rotate the wheel and check tension at four or five points. Variation means uneven wear.
- Sprocket teeth. Hooked or pointed teeth, rather than symmetrical ones, mean the sprockets are done.
- Adjuster position. If the axle adjusters are near the end of their travel, you are out of chain regardless of how it looks.
Replace chain and sprockets together. A new chain on worn sprockets will be destroyed quickly, and worn sprockets on a new chain will chew it just as fast. Fitting a kit costs more once and less overall. We keep kits in stock for the models we see most.
Before a long trip
If you are heading up the Gibb, out to a station or down to Hedland, clean and lubricate before you leave, carry lubricant with you, and take a look at the chain each morning. A chain failure 300 kilometres from the nearest town is a considerably larger problem than the same failure in Broome.
